After making general casework selections, it’s time to consider whether any upgrades are within budget and helpful for your space.
If you can only make one upgrade, make it PUR. PUR adhesive has significantly improved the life and durability of our casework. It also creates a thinner glue line, which provides a more seamless appearance. Most plastic laminate casework manufacturers still use regular hot melt glue. Why? It’s cheaper. PUR requires special machinery and processes. But trust us, it’s worth it. Don’t assume the manufacturer uses PUR. Ask for PUR and insist on it. In a harsh environment, it can add years to a cabinet’s life.
Another upgrade to consider is 3mm PVC edges instead of .5mm PVC edges. These edges are commonly upgraded on door and drawer fronts. You can also upgrade the leading edges of shelves and the cabinet body edges. Although we install many cabinets with .5mm PVC edges, 3mm PVC is more impact resistant, offering better protection. 3mm PVC also provides a cleaner look.
An integral particleboard base is the standard for casework, but it can be upgraded to a separate plywood base. Particleboard bases are vulnerable to moisture, so if your facility has moisture control issues, this upgrade is strongly advised.
Solid surface countertops and sinks are common upgrades in both healthcare and educational settings. In healthcare facilities, solid surface is vital for infection control. Solid surface is not porous like plastic laminate and can be easily sanitized. In school settings, solid surface materials are often selected for durability. Classroom casework withstands frequent use for 7+ hours each school day. Over time, this takes a toll on casework, but solid surface selections increase longevity.
The final touch on a casework project is the hardware. Full extension slides offer better access to drawer contents. Designer door and drawer pulls may be preferred to better coordinate with your facility’s aesthetic. The wire pull is the most common and versatile pull we install at Varia, and its finish can be upgraded to brushed aluminum, brushed chrome, or stainless steel. When it comes to choosing hinges, nothing is more durable than the standard 5-knuckle hinge. However, from an aesthetic standpoint, we agree that nothing looks better than a concealed hinge. Unlike a 5-knuckle hinge, concealed hinges do require maintenance/adjustments.
Cabinet upgrades improve the quality and appearance of your casework. But not all upgrades are advisable given your specific application. High use? Durability upgrades take precedence.
