What is PUR Adhesive? PUR is short for PolyUrethane Reactive Adhesive. It’s an acronym derived from the primary ingredient and its hardening process – Polyurethane Reactive. PUR was first used in Sweden in the 1980s and has grown in popularity over the past 30 years, starting in Europe, and then into the USA. It is used to make everything from shoes, to flooring, to furniture and now plastic laminate panels and casework. PUR is a non-toxic, quick setting and versatile adhesive used for our edgebanding process. It has been a game-changer in the plastic laminate casework industry where we use it to secure 3mm and .5mm PVC edging to laminate panels that are used in cabinet construction. PUR has significantly increased the life and durability of our casework while enhancing the fit and finish by minimizing the traditional glue-line to create a more monolithic look.
From an architect, designer or end user perspective, PUR is worth specifying and insisting on including in your next plastic laminate casework project. It is a significant improvement over adhesive that has been used in the past for edgebanding – EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) and PVA (polyvinyl acetate). EVA and PVA are mechanical bonds. PUR is a chemical bond. Once cured, PUR will not re-melt while EVA will.
Here are a couple of videos that compare PUR to EVA and help illustrate why PUR is superior.
PUR Advantages
– Minimal glue-line creating a visually superior end product.
– Quick setting.
– Superior moisture resistance.
– Stronger glue bond.
– Long lasting.
Make sure your investment is protected with PUR. Things unseen do matter.
